Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy on Sunday made an unannounced visit to the headquarters of the Nair Service Society (NSS) and held discussions with NSS general secretary G. Sukumaran Nair for over half-an-hour.
Sources close to the NSS chief said both the leaders discussed, among other things, the issue of amendment of the student-teacher ratio in government and aided schools.
According to them, the present ratio of one teacher for 40 students in the lower primary (LP) section and 45 students for the upper primary (UP) and high school (HS) sections has to be revamped in the light of the provisions in the Right to Education (RTE) Act.
The unscheduled visit of Mr. Chandy to Perunna had triggered speculation in the backdrop of a probable Cabinet reshuffle in which two of the names doing the rounds as front-runners in the race for induction into the Cabinet being that of Kerala Congress (B) leader K.B. Ganesh Kumar and Congress leader and Speaker G. Karthikeyan, both having close ties with the NSS.
