A 55-year-old woman was standing in front of her house at Vellakinar Pirivu on the outskirts of the city on Saturday evening when two youths approached her and said that they were college juniors of her son.

COIMBATORE: A 55-year-old woman was standing in front of her house at Vellakinar Pirivu on the outskirts of the city on Saturday evening when two youths approached her and said that they were college juniors of her son.
They were trying to contact her son pursuing her post-graduate degree in Toronto, Canada, through a social website, but in vain. They were looking for jobs and needed his help.
The woman went inside to get her son's number while the duo followed her into it, spraying her with pepper and covering her face with a cloth. They bound her, looted 17.5 sovereigns of gold from the house and fled.
Police said, V Vellaisamy (66), his wife V Banumathi (55) resided at Siva Castle. The couple's son V Prasanth (31) is studying Master of Engineering in Toronto, Canada and working part time. Vellaisamy runs a pawn broker shop in Gandhipuram.
On Saturday, Vellaisamy had gone to his shop and his wife was home alone. When she went outside, two youths approached her and asked her for her son Prasanth's contact details.
"The duo introduced themselves as Ashok and Deepak. They told my wife that they were searching jobs and needed help from our son," said Vellaisamy.
They entered the house, turned up the volume on the TV while they stole the gold. A woman came to the house asking for a cup of water. But the duo told her that Banumathi was taking a bath.
The duo spent at least half an hour in the house. Two hours later, a private security guard heard an unusual sound from the house and informed the locals who rushed to the house and rescued Banumathi.
Thudiyalur police have registered a complaint.were notified and they held an inquiry with the locals. Finger print experts lifted finger prints from the house. Thudiyalur police registered a case under section 392 (robbery) of the Indian Penal Code.
