GURGAON: The ride from Gurgaon to Manesar is about to get easier, with the new Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway operator planning to throw open a few extra lanes for smooth passage of traffic at the Kherki Daula toll plaza.
Currently, there are nine lanes on each side and during peak hours, long traffic tails are an usual affair at the toll plaza. Six extra split lanes will open from Monday and will remain functional round-the-clock, increasing the total number of lanes on each side to 12.
Around 60,000 to 70,000 vehicles reportedly pass through the plaza every day. "To improve the traffic situation, the number of lanes should increase. The six extra lanes will help cut down the waiting time," said Navneet Singh, CEO of Skylark Highway Solutions Ltd, the new Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway operator.
The operator also plans to deploy a number of traffic marshals to assist vehicles taking U-turns from the Delhi-Jaipur side to the Jaipur-Delhi side. When taking U-turna from Gurgaon towards Delhi, the traffic coming from the opposite direction (Jaipur) is disrupted and slows down," said Singh.
The new operator plans to deploy five marshals in each shift, bringing the total to 15 at the toll plaza. They will be an addition to the 120 traffic marshals already stationed across the 27.7 km long Expressway. Toll collectors and company officials were reportedly thrashed by one of the villagers a day after taking over the Expressway on Tuesday. Singh, however, denies this.
"There was a small argument over non-payment of toll tax by villagers who didn't carry valid identity cards at the time of incident. But reports that the company's chairman was thrashed are false. We have a number of assistants to deal with defaulters," Singh said.
