Manchester United legend Bryan Robson is confident that Louis van Gaal will make Robin van Persie his captain at Old Trafford this season.

This summer has seen the departures of several senior figures from United, with previous club captain Nemanja Vidic joining Inter and Rio Ferdinand signing for QPR, while Patrice Evra appears set for a move to Juventus.

Some suggested that Wayne Rooney's new bumper five-year deal at Old Trafford in February included a clause which ensured he would inherit the captaincy once Vidic departed.

But Robson, one of the most iconic captains in United's history, believes Van Gaal will give his countryman Van Persie the honour, having entrusted him with the armband for Netherlands at this summer's World Cup.

"Robin was his captain of Holland, so that is an obvious one," Robson told the Press Association. "I would be really surprised if he didn't give Robin it."

Robson is also confident that United will recover from last season's disastrous campaign under Van Gaal this term.

"The fans and the club were disappointed last year, but nobody hurts more than players," he added.

"I know these players. They have won the title, the Champions League, and a lot of them were really disappointed about what happened so the lads that are still at the club will want to bounce back, they will want to prove to people that they are top players and they can win things."
