RTE quota: BMC scraps offline admissions

Seats are, however, still vacant even after two rounds of online admissions.

The  BMC has finally scrapped the offline admission to 25 per cent seats reserved under the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education (RTE) Act in unaided non-minority schools. It will instead make sure that students, who were allotted a seat in the online process, are admitted to schools.

The BMC had already circulated a timetable to schools for conducting offline admissions, which were scheduled to start from July 11. But the decision to have an offline admission round was revoked after a meeting with state education commissioner, S Choklingam, last month.

Seats are, however, still vacant even after two rounds of online admissions. In the first round of admission for the 8,324 quota seats in 312 schools across the city, 6,560 applications were received, and seats were allotted to just 3,881 students. In the second round, out of total 990 students who were allotted seats, only 887 secured seats. According to officials, over 2,500 seats are yet to be filled up.

If there is a demand for offline admissions, we will work out a way to conduct the admissions accordingly,” said Shambhavi Jogi, BMC’s education officer.
