Reports of the sexual assault on a six-year-old schoolgirl in a school in Bangalore (July 20) and the resultant anger show that legislation has to be strengthened across India to bring quick relief to the families of victims and stringent punishment to the perpetrators.
A child growing up in today’s world has to face numerous challenges every single day, not to speak of the academic pressures. It appears as though none can be trusted in a child’s world.

As if news about the assault on an innocent schoolchild was not bad enough, one had to recoil in horror further on reading the report about Samajwadi Party leader Mulayam Singh Yadav’s insensitive statements on controlling crime (July 20). His frantic attempt to convince the public and the media with statistics shocks one and all. While he may not have control over the anti-social elements his party treats as assets, the least he can do is to avoid making insensitive remarks that only mar his stature.
