A farmer from Nanjangud hacked his 71-year-old father-in-law to death and also attacked his wife in public view over a financial row at Kamakshipalya on Sunday.
The accused, Kailash Murthy (51), was chased and caught by passers-by. He was thrashed by the people before being handed over to the police.
While Murthy’s father-in-law Murthappa (71) was killed on the spot, his wife Kalpana (45) sustained grievous injuries. She is being treated in a private hospital. The police have admitted Murthy to the same hospital as he complained of breathlessness after being beaten up by the public.
According to the police, the couple hails from Kinnara village in Nanjangud taluk and have three children, They used to frequently have domestic rows. After one such fight, Kalpana moved to her parent’s house in Mysore.
The police said that a few years ago, Murthy sold a piece of land for Rs. 40 lakh and invested the amount with a private finance company in Kalpana’s name.
Recently, Kalpana received intimation from the company that an interest of Rs. 6 lakh had accrued on the savings. She came to Bangalore with her father to the collect the amount.
When Murthy found that his wife had collected the money, he tracked her and her father to a lodge in Sunkadakatte and demanded his share.
When Kalpana refused, a heated argument ensued. Murthy attacked her with a chopper. When Murthappa came to her rescue, Murthy attacked him fatally. Murthy tried to escape, but passers-by chased him and caught him.
A case of murder and attempt to murder have been registered against Murthy.
