Single campus for Kozhikode ITIs soon

July 20, 2014 01:11 pm | Updated 01:11 pm IST - Kozhikode:

Minister for Labour Shibu Baby John has said that the government ITI and the Women’s ITI in Kozhikode district would be brought under a single campus for upgrading them to international standards.

He was inaugurating the administrative block of the Kozhikode Government ITI at Malikkadavu here on Saturday.

The 1,675 sq.m. building block was constructed at a cost of Rs. 2.5 crore. The government ITI established in 1959 was upgraded as centre of excellence in 2008. Currently it imparts training to 1,035 students in 20 trades. A comprehensive plan had been prepared to raise the institution to international standards, he said.

The Minister said that the government ITIs in the State functioned with poor facilities when compared to their counterparts in developed countries. However, the aim of the State government was to systematically improve the ITI education sector so that students would not have to depend on private institutions.

Then only international companies would recruit globally eligible and skilled candidates from these campuses. Steps would be taken to inform parents via SMS about their children playing truant, Mr. John said.

Exhorting students to utilize all opportunities available to them, he said that they should be well equipped to face a competitive world. The elected representatives wholeheartedly took up development schemes in the district, the Minister added, while praising the efforts of both A. Pradeepkumar, MLA and M.K.Raghavan, MP.

Mr. John said that the student unrest on campuses posed a threat to community at large and the educational institutions in particular. Recently an entire student community failed to appear for examinations as their technical institute remained closed due to strike for several weeks.

He also appreciated the move of the Students’ Federation of India to rethink its tactics of boycotting classes.

Mr. Pradeepkumar presided over the inaugural session while Mr. Raghavan was the chief guest.

Training director A. Shainamol, Public Works Division (Buildings Division) executive engineer M. K. Sasi, Kozhikode Corporation councilor O. Sadasivan, ITI chairman K.E. Shanavas and principal K. V. Mohammed were also present at the programme.
