NEW DELHI: Traffic movement on National Highway-24 will be disrupted with kanwariyas entering the city.
The traffic police have issued an advisory and asked commuters to avoid certain routes. During the procession, heavy vehicles will be diverted to the highway while connecting routes will be used by the kanwariyas. Thousands of devotees, who will cross the city on trucks and other vehicles, will travel on Mathura Road, Modi Mill, Seelampur road, Kalindi Kunj and other border areas.
The measures will be in place till July 25, police said.
"Traffic personnel will be deployed at all major crossings to ensure smooth flow, guide devotees regarding routes and traffic diversions, and prevent rash & negligent driving," said Anil Shukla, joint CP, traffic. He added that motorists are advised to avoid the mentioned roads and plan their journey in advance.
Police said they might have to enforce diversions on Mathura Road, Modi Mill, Maa Anandmai Marg and MB Road. Apart from them, heavy congestion might be witnessed on Rani Jhansi Road, Boulevard road, Azad Market Chowk, Khajuri Chowk, Gokalpuri flyover, Maujpur Chowk, Babarpur T-point, Bhajanpura Chowk, Keshav Chowk and Dharampura T-point and Mathura Road. Due to diversion of traffic bound for Apsara Border and Maharajpur Border to Ghazipur, there will be congestion on NH-24
The special cell of Delhi Police has also issued an alert which says the kanwariyas and their roadside camps can be targeted by miscreants. The district DCPs have been asked to beef up security in the areas concerned. Sources said the cell is gathering more intelligence about a suspected attack.
The officer said that major roads will have special teams equipped with alcometers to checkon drunk drivers.
