Tarun Tahiliani blends modern silhouettes with Indian craftsmanship, thus giving Indian bridal couture a stamp of individuality. He has just launched his bridal and couture collection and as new brides wait with bated breath, he manages to indulge their need for bespoke bridal wear. He weaves a narrative inspired by the splendour of Indian textiles and history. In an e-mail interview, the renowned designer discusses the need to create your own style rather than blindly follow a trend.
In recent times, wedding trousseaus have come to mean a lot more than just clothes worn during a ceremony. They define your personality. The colour palette of a bridal outfit sets a fashion story in motion. His recommendation: keep it simple and elegant “There is no ‘it’ colour. Bridal wear is not about a trend, it’s about individuality! Brides should wear what suits them; whatever they feel comfortable in. They should select pieces that reflect their personal style and not follow trends blindly.” Today, with brides looking beyond tradition, Tahiliani says, “To look modern, one must look like oneself and not a painted doll from 200 years ago. If you truly believe in your emancipation, you should want to look like yourself during your wedding. That is the true spirit of being modern. Keep your make up light, be yourself and you can go never go wrong with the classics! Also, plan the outfits in a way that heavy work can be removed without destroying the structure and silhouette.”
True to his style, Tahiliani’s latest collection sees a resurgence of Indian crafts and motifs. “My wedding collection is inspired by the opulence of Indian textile, powerful embroidery and rich craftsmanship. Whimsical motifs and sensational hues in reds, gold and pastels complement the renewed energy of revivalist craft and contemporary construction.”
