As the holy month of Ramzan enters its last leg, several people observing the sacred fast have, in the past 20 days, tried to make the best of this time by doing away with some of their bad habits.

And one of them is Irfan, an engineer by profession, who was addicted to tobacco and cigarette since he was 18. Today, he has done away with this habit after almost two decades, thanks to a resolution he took during the holy month. Drawing similar inspiration is Faizal Ahmad, a friend of Irfan, also decided to quit smoking. And their commitment to take the step was, according to them, powered by the pious month of Ramzan.

And such strong is their faith in the almighty that they do not get carried away even if a pack of cigarette is kept in front of them. According to Faizal, “The month of Ramzan is so spiritually drawn and powerful that I quit smoking without any difficulty. I find god supporting me everywhere.”

Ramzan, perhaps, is a holy month where those who want to get rid of the daily grind of consuming tobacco, cigarette, gutkha and alcohol, can easily do so. “It’s all about willingness. People who are adamant to leave behind bad practices do so in Ramzan. Devotion instigates them to lead a life without doing any wrong deed,’’ believes one Maulana Nadeem in Delhi. According to him, most people leave behind their bad habits during the month of Ramzan every year.

And from where do people get the inspiration and will to do so? “They do it by observing a day-long fast in this month. Roza attains its fulfillment only if a person keeping it does not consume any such thing that is not allowed in Islam,” said Maulana Nadeem.

The Imam also listed a number of practices that people are restricted to do during Ramzan. During Ramzan, a person cannot consume tobacco, alcohol or pork. Taking bribe of any sort is also considered unlawful. According to the Imam, the definition of a true Muslim is one who does not cause harm to any human being. “All the practices that violate human rights is against the rule of Ramzan,” says the Imam.

According to Maulana Nadeem, the main foundation of this sacred practice of fasting lies only in restricting oneself from bad habits, else its motive can never be achieved.
