Gaikhangam defends Ukhrul curfew
IMPHAL: Manipur deputy chief minister (home) Gaikhangam on Friday told the assembly that prohibitory orders were clamped on Ukhrul town to safeguard the people and maintain peace.
Gaikhangam's remarks came amid growing public protest against the move.
Following the killing of Ukhrul Autonomous District Council member Ngalanzar Malue by militants in the district on Saturday, police on Sunday raided a NSCN (IM) office in Ukhrul and arrested eight suspected rebels.
The district magistrate then imposed prohibitory orders under Section 144 CrPC on the town where a large number of police commandos and IRB personnel were deployed.
Irate Ukhrul denizens, however, demanded revocation of the orders, unconditional release of the eight cadres and withdrawal of police forces from the district.
