Initial investigations into the gang rape and murder inside a primary school here show that the vengeance with which the rapists committed brutalities on the woman before she died surpasses all limits of cruelty.

"It is more horrendous than the Delhi gang rape and murder," said a police officer in a chilling reminder of the December 2013 case that resulted in national outrage and compelled the Centre to pass a new severe anti-rape law.

The 30-year-old woman's naked body was found on Thursday morning in a pool of blood inside a school in Balkheda locality, just a few kilometres from Jabrauli village, which former US president Bill Clinton visited the same day.

"It was a sickening site. There was blood all over the place in the school park," said an officer. "She was obviously badly injured... even her private parts were mutilated. She must have crawled on the ground, looking for safety, and bled to death through the night."

The post-mortem report says the rapists mercilessly thrashed her with a blunt object or a thick stick, ostensibly in a fit of rage, and even thrust that stick into her genitals after raping her.

"Rape has been confirmed," Sutapa Sanyal, Addl DGP, looking into the case, said. "There are at least a dozen severe injury marks. There was definitely more than one person..." She termed it a "blind rape and murder".

The woman, a resident of Lucknow and a widow with two children, used to work as a lab technician at the Sanjay Gandhi PGI hospital nearby. It is possible that she knew the men.

Mohanlalganj inspector Qamruddin and sub-inspector ML Verma were suspended on Friday in this connection. The local police had failed to secure the scene of crime for proper forensic examination. The inspector, it is learnt, took pictures of the naked body instead of covering it after the police photographer had done his job.
