Commonwealth Games 2014 | Game plan
The promising debutants and champion veterans who will travel to the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow will have one aim: to win medals. Will they be able to rise above the mess that is Indian sports?
India won 101 medals at the 2010 Commonwealth Games, a record haul that helped it finish second in the medals tally behind sporting powerhouse Australia. That high will not be replicated in Glasgow. There won’t be partisan crowds to cheer them on. There will be fewer events to compete in (archery, in which India won eight medals, has been dropped). The sporting federations and administrators, spurred on by the inflated budget and close scrutiny that come with a home tournament, had worked harder than ever to make the athletes ready: Post-games, it was back to the usual chaos. Yet the athletes who will travel to Glasgow will have only one aim: to win medals. They will include some of our veterans—those who have chipped away for years to become the world’s best—and the new, young sportspeople who have followed in their footsteps. And they will include a woman fighting a lonely battle to make a comeback.
The 2014 Commonwealth Games will be held from 23 July-3 August and will be aired live on Network Ten.
