With several cases of alleged rape being reported from across the State, women members of the Legislative Assembly on Friday urged the government to take precautionary measures.

In a letter to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, they demanded that the government arrest and initiate severe action against those involved in the cases. Women legislators sought protection for girls and women in all educational institutions.

MLAs Shakuntala Shetty, Sharada Mohan Shetty (Congress), Jolle Shashikala (BJP), Sharada Pooryanaik (JD-S), and nominated member Vinisha Nero said:“People are losing confidence in the system.” They urged the Chief Minister to issue directions to officers concerned to take preventive measures to curb crimes against women. “After these crimes against women, we members of the Child and Women Welfare Committee too feel unsafe,” they said in the letter. Speaking to The Hindu , Ms. Shetty said the government should take stringent action against the culprits and ensure women’s safety across the State.
