Disregarding the Mayor-led Standing Committee’s unanimous resolution seeking halt in the continuing demolition of unauthorised constructions across different parts of the city, GHMC Commissioner, Somesh Kumar reaffirmed that the drive would continue as it was a “regulatory function of the civic body”.

Earlier, the Standing Committee chaired by Mayor Mohammed Majid Hussain on Thursday resolved to stop the demolition drive and sought action against the municipal officials concerned during whose tenure the unauthorised constructions took place.

While reiterating that demolitions of unauthorised constructions would continue, the Commissioner on Friday said the government would be approached about the Standing Committee resolution regarding provision of one more opportunity for building regularisation, punishing the culprit town planning officials and stopping the demolition drive.

On Friday, a total of 33 ongoing unauthorised constructions in different parts of the city were pulled down by the officials.

The GHMC was carrying out the task without any discrimination between small and big constructions and the mistake lay with those building without permissions, he said, while cautioning that those taking up unauthorised constructions or purchasing such properties would suffer for their mistake.

Also, action was taken against four town planning officials till date and there would be no excuse for the culprits in this issue, he claimed.

The Telangana government is keen about the future of Hyderabad and to transform it into a world class city, the demolitions should continue, Mr.Somesh Kumar asserted. Building regularisation scheme only helps when the violations in building construction were minor but those in total violation of several norms would not be regularised and same was the case with constructions taken up in government or Wakf lands, he added.

BJP floor leader Bangari Prakash in a statement demanded that the unauthorised constructions be regularised instead of being subjected to demolition. He raised questions on the way these officials operated and mislead the building owners and called for suitable action against them.
