Drama in Assembly over rising crimes against women
There was high drama in the Legislative Assembly on Friday over rising crimes against women across the state -- Bangalore in particular.

The MLAs turned up in black badges and criticised the Siddaramaiah government for failing to ensure the safety of women.

They rejected home minister K J George’s assurances that the government had already taken action to bring to book those behind crimes against women and children.

Unsatisfied by George’s response, the protesting MLAs jumped into the well of the House.

CM Siddaramaiah accused the opposition of politicising the issue and drew attention to the action already taken in such cases – including the #FrazerTownHorror case and the rape of a six-year-old girl at a high-end school in Bangalore.

With the MLAs unrelenting, Speaker Kagodu Thimmappa adjourned the session and summoned leaders of all parties to seek their cooperation in the smooth functioning of the House.

When the Session resumed, he gave them an opportunity to raise the issue. However, the session had to be adjourned again after ruling party MLAs objected to opposition MLAs taking up too much time to explain each of the recent crimes against women in the state.

The opposition then staged a walkout, and protested for 30 minutes in front of Kengal Hanumanthaiah’s statue in the Vidhana Soudha campus.

The issue of women’s safety was also raised in the Legislative Council on Friday.

Later, BJP MLAs and MLCs came together to protest against the failure of the state government to ensure women’s safety.
