The Kozhikode police have formed a special team led by Kasaba Circle Inspector V.J. Paulose to nab four Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) leaders reportedly involved in assaulting a group of anti-corruption activists here last month.
This was after the High Court of Kerala rejected the anticipatory bail of the DYFI leaders — M. Varun Bhasker, son of former Mayor M. Bhaskaran and district secretariat member of the CPI (M), C.M. Jamsheer, K.V. Pramod, and N.V. Shafi on Wednesday.
The DYFI leaders, who have been evading arrest all these days, had been charged with various Sections including 307 (attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code. One of the accused was involved in more than 40 criminal cases. The police had to strongly object to their anticipatory bail, A.V. George, Commissioner of Police, Kozhikode city, said.
On June 30, a group of DYFI workers allegedly attacked the participants of a sit-in organised by the Azhimathi Virudha Janakeeya Munnani, an anti-corruption forum of residents at Mananchira. Several persons, including K.P. Vijayakumar, leader of the anti-corruption movement, and BJP district president P. Reghunath, were injured.
The police had been facing criticism for allowing the accused to escape after the incident.
