A black swan flying into overhead power lines outside Big Save Furniture on Fraser Street caused a blackout in the Merivale area overnight.
Greerton Fire Brigade responded to reports a power lines sparking on Fraser Street, outside Fraser Cover, about 10pm.
The black swan that residents say caused the outage.
Greerton Fire Brigade senior station officer Neil Brown says when they arrived at the scene there was nothing obvious.
'We left the scene in the hands of power authorities.”
A resident in the area told SunLive that a black swan hit powerlines outside Big Save Furniture, on the waterfront side of Fraser Street.
Power was cut to around 80 properties as contracts worked to restore the supply.
Powerco acting network operations manager Dean Stevenson says the power cut occurred just after 10pm, affecting customers in Parkvale and Tauranga South.
He says a generator was connected at 2.30am to supply the properties with electricity.
The generator will remain in place while Powerco investigates the cause of the fault and makes repairs.
