Randeep Hooda is to play the role of Dr Ajay Kumar, a doctor turned police official turned politician in a film tentatively titled Dr Ajay with Chitrangada Singh as his love interest. Prawal Raman, known for directing films like Darna Mana Hai, Gayab, 404: Error Not Found and whose Main Aur Charles, based on serial killer Charles Sobhraj, will be focus on the struggles of Ajay Kumar on screen.
Ajay Kumar was a doctor who later became an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer and was elected as the Member of Parliament in the 15th Lok Sabha, from the Jamshedpur Lok Sabha constituency.
According to Raman, “Ajay’s life story is very inspiring. It is not about a wish to bring the change, but to be the change. A doctor from Karnataka, he was posted in many places in Bihar and could have made a good life for himself. But he choose Jamshedpur because that city was instrument in making him a graduate to a hard-core police officer. He later contested elections and became an MP. Unfortunately he lost. Earlier I made a documentary on his life and was astonished at the amount of work he had done. He was instrumental in installing 17000 solar lights in villages to building roads in and around Jamshedpur. This man strives to serve people relentlessly.”
The director adds that Ajay’s wife is a big driving force in in his life. “Hence the film is a love story set against the backdrop of crime and politics; from a common man to becoming an extraordinary personality.”
Raman plans to start shooting for the film in December-January after Main Aur Charles releases by October.
When queried why two of his films are based on real characters, Raman says, “It is better to get inspired from real life characters than Hollywood movies.”
