Eurozone Construction Output Falls In May

Eurozone construction output declined notably in May, after rebounding in the previous month, figures from Eurostat showed Thursday.

Construction output fell 1.5 percent monthly in May, after rebounding 0.4 percent increase in the previous month, which was revised down from 0.8 percent reported initially. In March, construction output dropped 0.5 percent.

Output in the civil engineering sector declined 3.0 percent in May, much faster than April's 0.3 percent drop. Building sector activity also logged a decrease of 1.1 percent, following a 0.3 percent gain in the previous month.

On a yearly basis, construction output growth slowed to 3.5 percent in May, after a revised 7.4 percent climb in April. In March, production advanced 6.4 percent. Building sector output expanded by 5.3 percent in May, while civil engineering sector activity fell by 2.6 percent.

In the EU 28, construction output dropped 1.6 percent monthly in May, after a 0.3 percent climb in the previous month. Annually, output rose 3.2 percent, which was much slower than April's 7.1 percent increase.
