The 48 people belonging to Tirupur Information Technology Association and Arulagam Nature Conservation Society are a contented lot at the end of the 500 km motorcycle rally they took out to highlight the need for creation of ‘vulture safe zones’ to save the critically endangered species.

The rally which began earlier this week from Tirupur city, culminated here after covering places in Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka.

Diclofenac

“The response from the cattle farmers has been tremendous and they wanted to join hands with us in the conservation of vulture in the coming days as the main cause for the decline in the vulture population was the drug, Diclofenac, given to the cows by the farmers. When vultures fed on the drug-contaminated cow carcasses, they face rapid liver failure resulting in death,” S. Bharathidasan, secretary of Arulagam, said. The rallyists pointed out that many farmers were even surprised to see activists coming with message to save a species like vulture. Rendering support to the rally, a group of students from Kerala joined the crusade when it passed through Wayanad.
