The Kabini reservoir in H.D. Kote taluk is nearing full reservoir level (FRL). It was 2,280 ft on Wednesday as against the FRL of 2,284 ft. The authorities have started releasing water at the rate of 10,000 cusecs.
Thanks to copious rainfall in the dam’s catchment area at Wayanad in Kerala, the inflow on Wednesday was at the rate of 21,000 cusecs.
Sources at the dam office told The Hindu that the inflow was expected to increase with incessant rainfall in the catchment area and the discharge of water into the Kapila might go up if the inflow increased.
Usually, the dam authorities maintain the water-level at 2,280 ft to 2,081 ft and release the inflow received thereafter into the river.
Meanwhile, flood warning has been issued as a precautionary measure. People living on the banks of the Kapila have been told to move to safe places following discharge of water into the river from the dam, the sources added.
According to sources, the office of the tahsildar, H.D. Kote, has been requested to take steps for the safety of people living on the river banks. Devotees visiting Srikanteshwaraswamy temple at Nanjangud bathe in the river at ‘Snana Ghatta’. The authorities will take steps to prevent people from getting close to the river.
Puja plannedKabini Raitha Hitarakshana Samiti has decided to offer puja to the Kabini dam on July 18 at 11 a.m. with the water-level almost at the FRL. Samiti president Kurubur Shanthkumar, in a press release here, urged the farmers in the Kabini command area to participate in the event.
