WACA looks to future

The WA Cricket Association has appointed businessman Mike Smith to head a committee charged with delivering a review on the future of its East Perth headquarters by the end of the year.

The review will examine all options for the WACA Ground, which will miss out on hosting a Test match this year, including redevelopment.

The WACA abandoned a proposed apartment deal with developer Ascot Capital in December, which was supposed to provide the finances to underpin a redevelopment. The review comes as the State Government is preparing to unveil details of the new major stadium at Burswood today.

WACA chairman Sam Gannon said cricket had told the Government it would look at playing domestic Big Bash Twenty20 and one-day international fixtures at Burswood stadium subject to its members being catered for and commercial terms.

He said it was difficult to see a Test match being shifted away from the WACA because of historic crowd numbers. "We are committed to the WACA Ground being the home of cricket," he said.
