Expert committee to study women's safety
BANGALORE: Karnataka government is constituting an expert committee to study issues related to the safety of women and children in the state.
Participating in a discussion on the abduction and rape of a college student in Fraser Town in Bangalore in the legislative assembly on Wednesday, chief minister Siddaramaiah promised that the committee's recommendations and suggestions would be implemented.
Home minister KJ George said the committee would be asked to submit its report within three months. He said the committee would comprise of MLAs, MLCs, NGO representatives and experts. If the law requires an amendment, we are ready for it,'' the home minister said.
Following the incident, the government has intensified patrolling in the state, especially Bangalore. We are also taking measures to recruit more women police personnel,'' George said.
Case against inspector?
Meanwhile, suspended police inspector of Pulikeshinagar, Mohammed Rafi, may face more trouble. The BJP members and some ruling party MLAs demanded a criminal case against him, besides his arrest.
Home minister admitted that the inspector had been suspended for not registering the complaint under relevant sections of law. He said the officer had omitted Sec 364(A) and 376 of the IPC.
Opposition leader Jagadish Shettar said: There's no discipline in the police force. If you don't act against him (police inspector), people will lose confidence in the system.'' Former speaker KG Bopaiah said the inspector was liable for prosecution under Section 217, 218 and 222 of the IPC.
Suspension is not a punishment. He is unfit to be in the service. His actions amount to abetment. Register a case and send him to judicial custody,'' said KR Ramesh Kumar (Congress).
The home minister assured to explore the possibility of filing a case and announce the government's decision on Thursday morning.
