Regarded as one of the pioneers of the Indian fashion industry, designer Monisha Jaisingh gave a lot of thought before deciding to create a new line “World Bride”. It will be unveiled at the ongoing “India Couture Week” on Thursday.

Monisha wanted the new line to work for a bride irrespective of her nationality. She is looking at a contemporary bride who is not bound by the usual norms of wedding attire. In the globalised world, she wanted to create a collection for a bride whose marriage can be solemnised in a temple in Rajasthan, a mosque in a West Asian country or a church in Vienna.

The collection has a comprehensive range of concept saris, fitted gowns and cropped kurtis.

Why did you choose bridal collection for the show?

The reason being that the world is shrinking. It is becoming a smaller place and a number of cross-cultural marriages are taking place. I am inundated with lot of queries from to-be-brides on what kind of dresses they need to be wearing on the D-day.

What are your expectations from India Couture Week?

Fashion shows are really my way of communication. I am certain that the show will live up to my audience’s expectations. The show will portray my take on the modern Indian bride.

What kind of research went into this collection?

Research never ends. It always continues. This collection took eight to 10 months of research but research as old as 5 years has been done on some of the dresses which would be showcased at the “India Couture Week”.

What is the source of inspiration?

The collection’s inspiration is a fusion of Indian, Mughal and European styles of architecture and lifestyle. A line specially created for the modern, confident, edgy bride and her entourage.

Since you have been in the couture business for a long time, is it a challenge every time you participate in such a big fashion extravaganza?

Participating in each fashion show is a challenge and an experience in itself whether it is on a large or small scale. But couture week in India is huge because of the target audience it caters to. The wedding sector is getting larger by the day and so are the expectations.
