Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Samant Rohan Rajendra cautioned women against wearing heavy jewellery while going on early morning walks or on roads at night. He was addressing an interaction organised by women’s clubs in K.K. Nagar with the city police personnel on the state of women’s safety in the city.
“Raise an alarm if in a danger and contact the nearest police station to report any untoward incident,” he said.
Speaking on the ways to ensure safety of belongings during any robbert in houses, Mr Samant asked women not to hide keys of lockers of wardrobes inside the house and asked them to carry them with them.
A. Kasturi, a member of the Kalaivani Women’s Sangam, said that they had organised the programme with a view to putting effective safety measures in place. “There is also a lot of hesitation among women to approach the police and we wanted to have an interaction with them in order to dispel such notions,” she stated.
“We feel hesitant to go to a police station to register a complaint,” said B. Hema, a resident of K.K. Nagar. While most of the women echoed her views, many of them also expressed concerns over increasingly becoming targets for chain snatchers.
Interacting with the women, P. Chandran, Inspector of Police, said that it was imperative for them to approach the police station in case of a robbery or any other crime.
“There is a lot of hesitation among the public, women in particular, due to the bad portrayal of the department in movies and serials. The police have been trained to extend cooperation to everyone and are willing to help,” he assured.
The women voiced their concern about the increasing number of robberies in houses located in the area. Reacting to their concerns, S. Narayanan, Assistant Commissioner, Anna Nagar, said that more number of people should inform the nearest police station if they were planning to leave the city for a long time.
“Apart from that, we have a two-wheeler patrol team who makes a note of all the locked houses. The list is then given to a night patrol team who check on the houses again,” he explained.
