GANDHINAGAR: The
Gujarat Maritime Board (GMB) has decided to revive
Parodiya jetty, close to Bed port, near
Jamnagar.
The jetty's use had declined considerably over the years due to lack of infrastructure like roads. Moreover, with the development of Bedi port in the vicinity, large part of the cargo shifted here. Earlier, GMB only had the customs clearance to handle just salt at this facility.
However, now with all the necessary infrastructure in place, GMB has got clearances from the customs and
Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB) to review this facility, which can handle dry bulk cargo like coal and bauxite.
"Parodiya jetty can immediately handle coal required for the power plant of Essar near Salaya. Presently, Essar handles it from Bedi, which is about 60 kms from its power plant. The logistics cost would be reduced if they handled coal from Parodiaya. This will also ease congestion at the port of Bedi, which is presently operating beyond its port capacity," a GMB official said.
The nearest major road from this jetty is the Jamnagar-Okha state highway, which is about 17km away.
