VADODARA: In yet another incident of crocodile attack, a 22-year-old woman was dragged away by a crocodile on the banks of Dev river near Goraj on the outskirts of the city on Tuesday. Kanta Vasava was washing clothes on the bank of the river at about 2 pm when the reptile attacked her from behind and dragged her into the water. Kanta shouted for help but there was no one around.
According to locals, some people standing on the other bank of the river spotted the incident and informed the villagers.
The fire brigade officials rushed to the spot and began a search for the girl. Animal activist, Rakesh Vadhwana and Vishal Thakur too reached the village to help in the search operations. "The incident happened in Madhavpura village that is located near Goraj Muni Seva Ashram. The search operations continued till late on Tuesday but the girl couldn't be spotted," Rakesh told TOI.
Crocodile attacks usually increase during monsoons as water level in the rivers go up. Many reptiles even stray out of the river or swim to distant places. Goraj and its adjacent villages have witnessed several crocodile attacks in the last few years. In October last year, a 65-year-old was dragged away by a crocodile in Dev river in Goraj. Dahiben Parmar was washing clothes near the river when she was attacked and killed.
In last three years, over five such incidents have been reported in Goraj village. In August last year, Swarupa Parmar, a resident of Goraj, was dragged away by a crocodile and in 2012 an 11-year-old girl was dragged away by crocodile in the same river. Locals say that some crocodiles in the area have developed a habit of attacking human beings.
