BHUBANESWAR: AIIMS New Delhi director M C Misra, who is known for developing AIIMS trauma centre into a model of care for emergency services in the country, on Tuesday expressed dismay over the approach road to AIIMS Bhubaneswar.
"There should be a cloveleaf flyover to the institute for smooth transport of patients," Misra said while addressing an event to mark the second foundation day of the premier institute here.
Chief secretary Jugal Kishore Mohapatra was the chief guest.
Misra said the approach road to the institute from the national highway is too congested. To reach AIIMS at Sijua village, one has to take a narrow underpass on NH-5 from Patrapada Square or a bylane with multiple cuts before before the Square. According to Misra, the flyover should lead from the NH to AIIMS offering a seamless passage.
Later, delivering a guest lecture on 'Trauma Epidemic in India', Misra said India has failed in establishing proper trauma care (accident care) facilities. Chance of survival of trauma victims is minimal in this country, he said.
Several accident deaths can be avoided by small measures like wearing helmets and driving carefully, he added.
Local AIIMS authorities said the existing road is not a major problem though a better arrangement is welcome. "However, it is for the National Highways Authority of India and the state government to take a call about a new flyover," said AIIMS Bhubaneswar director A K Mahapatra.
Mahapatra delivered a talk on 'Head Injury: An untold story of Human Misery', highlighting how people drive carelessly because of ignorance and end up in difficult situations. Around 1,500 patients are being provided clinical services daily in the outdoor and causality wings of AIIMS Bhubaneswar.
