Blame it on Tiger Shroff. His successful debut in Heropanti at the capable hands of producer Sajid Nadiadwala has brought the focus back on other superstar sons who are waiting in the wings.
The news that the sons of Sunny Deol, Vinod Khanna and Anil Kapoor amongst others, making their debuts as actors has been floating in the media, but there’s been a long silence after that. Clearly, the next steps are being planned with a lot more precision.
An update on recent launchpads brought one fact to the fore — that star-fathers, unlike those in the '80s, preferred to have outside producers launch their pyaara betas.
Anil Kapoor’s son Harshvardhan, who will be launched by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra in his musical love tale, Mirza Sahibaan, is undergoing training for diction and physical attributes for the role of a fierce and intense lover. Though Rakeysh and Kapoor Sr are in touch on the progress made by young Harsh, the boy himself is very much his own person and has taken full charge of his life. The film, which will roll in September 2014, is slated to release at the end of 2015.

Sakshi Khanna — Vinod Khanna’s third son — will make his foray into Bollywood in early 2015. Sakshi has been in the waiting for almost four years, but the family is in no hurry and remain tight-lipped about his career. The youngster, who’s on the verge of completing his acting training, is busy with workshops. He will be introduced by Milan Luthria, who confirms, “He is completing his training and the film will roll early 2015.”

It was Amitabh Bachchan and Jeetendra who changed the trend by handing over their sons’ careers to outsiders. Tusshar Kapoor was launched by Vashu Bhagnani in Mujhe Kucch Kehna Hai (2001) and Abhishek Bachchan was seen in JP Dutta’s Refugee (2000). Since then, quite a few star kids like Ranbir Kapoor, Varun Dhawan, Sonam Kapoor, Arjun Kapoor, Alia Bhatt and Zayed Khan were launched outside their home banners. Says Sajid Nadiadwala, who recently launched Tiger Shroff, “So what if their fathers are not launching their kids? We are there to launch them.” Vinod Khanna, who had introduced his second son Akshaye Khanna in Himalay Putra (1997), admits that it's not easy to launch a talent. “These days, it has become increasingly difficult to launch your own son,” he states.

While names of Rajkumar Santoshi, Anil Sharma and Imtiaz Ali were tossed around as filmmakers being considered to launch Sunny Deol’s son Karan, the fact is that the youngster is often spotted at Sunny Super Sound in his track pants and tees assisting his father on Ghayal 2. News on his acting debut is still a mystery.
Salman Khan is all set to launch Suniel Shetty’s daughter Athiya and Aditya Pancholi’s son Sooraj in his production, which is slated to be a Valentine’s Day 2015 release. In the meantime, the actor, who has become the latest godfather to newbies, is also helping former co-star Bhagyashree’s son Abhimanyu to find a place in Bollywood. Buzz has it that Sajid Nadiadwala is on the lookout for suitable subjects for Danny Denzongpa’s son Rinzing and Ranjeet’s son Chiranjeev.
Says Ranjeet, “Movies was not his priority earlier when he was getting offers as he was focused on racing. Now, he is mentally prepared for acting and is getting trained. He doesn’t want to be a laughing stock. Though he has been getting offers from several big banners, we wouldn’t like to talk about anything now. Perhaps, the producer will do the needful whenever his launch pad is ready.”
