Heavy rain lashes parts of Kodagu

Woman washed away in Muttarmudi waters

July 15, 2014 11:42 pm | Updated 11:42 pm IST - MYSORE:

Heavy rain continued to lash parts of Kodagu on Tuesday. The district administration has ordered the closure of all educational institutions for two days.

Meanwhile, a 38-year-old woman, Gavitha, of Moornadu, which is around 18 km from Madikeri, was washed away in the Muttarmudi after she slipped and fell.

Following heavy rain in Madikeri and Bhagamandala, which is the catchment area of the Cauvery, there was flooding in along the banks of the river downstream.

Normal life has been thrown out of gear. The Cauvery is approaching the danger mark close to Triveni Sangama at Bhagamandala. In some stretches, the river was flowing over the Bhagamandala–Madikeri road making it difficult for the commuters and vehicles to pass.

Road connectivity to Bhagamandala has been severed due to heavy rain and flooding.

The region has gone dark for the last two days owing to disruption in power supply. Landslips have been reported near the View Point, close to Bhagamandala, and in anticipation of deteriorating weather conditions, the authorities have banned vehicle entry to Talacauvery.

The inflow into the Harangi reservoir has increased and the reservoir level on Tuesday was 2,848 ft against the full reservoir level of 2,859 ft. The authorities expect the FRL to be attained in a couple of days.

Traffic diverted

Mangalore Staff Correspondent adds:

Traffic on the State Highway 88 (Mani-Madikeri) was diverted as the road was partially closed on Tuesday after landslips. Only single lane movement was allowed on the road on Tuesday, leading to a long queue of cars and trucks.

A portion of the newly-constructed State Highway at Peraje in Kodagu district collapsed after heavy rain on Monday night, said the Sullia Police, who were called in to control the traffic.

The mud underneath the road (which was at a higher level than the surrounding plantations) washed away in the rain, leading to the road caving in, the police added.

Earlier, the road section at Anegundi at Sullia taluk was closed after a hillock collapsed on the road. Traffic was diverted through Bellare and Kumbra, until excavators cleared the road around 11 a.m., the Sullia police said.

In Shimoga district, the water-level in all major reservoirs has increased considerably.
