BANGALORE: Paava Kathakali – Traditional Puppet Theatre (Glove Puppets) by Natana Kairali Group was organized by Indira Gandhi National Centre for Arts (IGNCA), Ministry of Culture, Government of India in association with YUVA – Yelahanka United Environment Association on Tuesday.
Paava Kathakali', an ancient puppetry is about two centuries old originating from the migrants artisans from Andhra who used to frequent the Kerala coast in 1970s exhibiting this art form.
This dying art form got a new lease of life when Kerala based Natana Kairali group took interest in reviving it.
What makes this show unique is the puppeteers do not hide behind a screen (they are visible along with the puppets) and use fingers to control the puppet.
INGCA is working on revival of this century old dying art and had organized the public performance in Bangalore.
The show was held in a park in Yelahanka New Town A sector near the Allalsandra lake and was attended by over 1000 people. The puppet team was led by Mr.Srinivasan and consisted of 8 artists from Kerala
