An Artistic Take On The Noh Mul Mauling
posted (July 14, 2014)
Earlier on in the news, we told you about the start of the Noh Mul trial in Corozal town. Well, whether by coincidence or design, a group of artists from the Image Factory made a timely art intervention at the Noh Mul site in the Orange Walk District on Saturday.

A total of nine artists and poets led by Yasser Musa visited Noh Mul which is near Nuevo San Juan village. They produced three works of art on site. The first is called Naked at Noh Mul by Micah Vernon where the artist posed in front of the damaged main temple with a well-placed sign saying "Welcome to Las Vegas."

The second piece by Kate Usher was named "Bury My Credentials" and the third by Yasser Musa is called Landing on Nohmul by Yasser Musa.

He told our colleagues at CTV-3 about the idea behind the art intervention:..

Yasser Musa, organizer
"I really want the younger generation to get a sense that this happens every day in our country. It's easy to say oh its horrible and so and then next week we find something else to complain about, so I was telling them earlier that complaining is not the way to look at these things. You have to look at it from a physiological standpoint; what does it mean? What do you believe in and as Belizeans we have to believe in something and that is why we've been working very hard to push for the teaching of African and Maya history in our school system because the only remedy to this kind of destruction is for the population to be educated and aware, so aware that when it happens then the people really take serious and concrete action rather than just talking saying oh, it's something bad and so, but we don't know why its bad and so today we had 3 art interventions, meaning 3 art actions take place here."

Noh Mul's main temple was bulldozed in May of 2013 by a contractor looking for roadfill. That contractor, D-Mar's construction is owned by UDP Candidate Denny Grijalva who has publicly accepted blame and said his company should be fined.
