Canadian Airport duty-free sales rise 15% in April

The Frontier Duty Free Association has reported a 15% rise in Canadian airport duty-free sales to C$23m ($21.4m) for the month of April 2014 according to figures provided by the Canadian Border Services Agency. Sales from January to April 2014 rose around 13% compared to the previous corresponding period in 2013. Sales at Canadian airport duty-free shops for January/April 2014 totaled C$97m ($90.4m).

Overall, national land border duty-free sales for April 2014 rose 8.89% to C$9.6m ($8.9m) compared to the same month last year. Sales from January to April 2014 dropped 3% compared to January/April 2013, with sales at land border duty-free (January to April 2014) equaling C$32m ($29.8m).

In the Prairie Region, sales in April 2014 grew 13% to C$785,000 ($732,000). For January/ April 2014, sales reached C$2.7m ($25.1m), a slight increase of 0.16% compared to the same period last year.

The Pacific Sales figure for April 2014 was around C$1.8m ($1.7m), a 9% increase compared to April 2013. Sales between January and April 2014 equaled C$6m ($5.6m) compared to January to April 2013, a decrease of around 5%.

Sales in Ontario in April 2014 were approximately C$5.2m ($4.8m), rising 6.5% compared to April. For January to April 2014, sales totaled $17m ($15.8m) a decrease of 4% compared to the previous corresponding period in 2013.

For the Atlantic/Quebec region, sales rose 14% to C$1.7m ($1.6m) compared to April 2013. Between January and April 2014, sales dropped 3% to C$5.4m ($5m) compared to the same period last year.
