OTE, Cosmote expand VDSL, LTE networks [TeleGeography CommsUpdate]

(TeleGeography CommsUpdate Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Greece's OTE announced in a press release that its high speed VDSL broadband network has been expanded to cover 280 local exchanges across the country, and 2,250 outdoor (street) cabinets located in Attica (Athens and its surrounds), Thessaloniki, Alexandroupoli, Komotini, Xanthi and Serres. In June, VDSL was expanded further to cover the Attica regions of Halandri and Ilioupoli, while 1,500 extra VDSL outdoor cabinets are scheduled for activation by year-end in various districts of Athens and Thessaloniki, including Kifisia, Nea Kifisia, Nea Philadelfeia, Neo Irakleio, Holargos, Kalamaki, Psychiko, Agia Paraskevi, and Oraiokastro, as well as the remaining parts of Kalamaria, and Thermi. Furthermore, between July and December 150 additional local exchanges outside Athens and Thessaloniki will offer VDSL. By end-June 2014 OTE's VDSL services were available to approximately 1.20 million households and businesses all over Greece, while OTE's target is to increase population coverage to 30% by the end of 2014.

In the same press release, OTE announced that its Cosmote mobile division is aiming for 70% 4G LTE population coverage by the end of this year, up from the 60%-plus coverage it currently claims. Since the beginning of 2014, 4G services have been activated in additional areas including Lamia, Arta, Messolongi, Ierapetra, the villages of Apokoronas in Chania, western Pelion, Oraiokastro, as well as Kephalonia, Ithaca, Lesvos, Chios, Salamina and Telos. During the summer period, 4G coverage has also been expanded to areas of Corfu, Samos, Leros, western Rhodes, and Hersonissos in Chania, as well as in Agrinio, Grevena, Igoumenitsa and Amaliada. Cosmote's LTE network covers all cities of 50,000-or-over population, plus various smaller towns across the country, and 'all popular tourist destinations'.
