VASCO: Days after nearly 74 shanties in Kattem-Baina faced the wrath of the sea, now 400m away from the site, locals are living in fear of their structures being washed away.
Due to sand erosion, the rising water during high tide reaches the tenements near the sewage treatment plant at Katem -Baina. Around seven coconut trees came crashing down following heavy rains and soil erosion in the area.
A canoe, belonging to Laximan Tandel was also damaged. He suffered a loss of 70,000.
Locals are helping residents put up sand bags to prevent water from entering the tenements.
Deputy collector Gaurish Sankwalkar visited the area and briefed district collector Venancio Furtado about the situation.
Sources said that a water resources department (WRD) team is likely to inspect the area on Tuesday. Officials are preparing to evacuate the area, if the need arises.
