Mumbai firm gets CRZ nod to build small & medium crafts at Bedi port

A Mumbai-based firm, Parekh Marine Agencies Pvt Ltd has received the CRZ (Coastal Regulation Zone) clearance from the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) to build a ship-building and repairing base at Bedi port in Jamnagar. The company, a part of Parekh Group will upgrade the existing docks – Jagajit and Gomti at the Old Bedi port for shipbuilding and repairing facilities, official sources at the Gujarat Maritime Board (GMB) confirmed on Monday.

The GMB has allotted a total of 52,000 square meters of land for the proposed project on a long-lease basis (about 15 years). This includes a water front of 189 meters. Of the allotted land, 9000 square meters will be used for building, shed and other allied facilities. “The project has been pending for a few years for want of environment clearance,” said a GMB spokesperson about the Rs 31 crore project. The port and transport department of the state government had accorded approval to the proposal of Parekh Marine in December 2009. Unlike other shipyards built for large crafts, the company plans to create a facility that can be used for construction and repair of small and medium sized crafts and fabrication of any shipping or industrial machinery that moves by sea.
