If Jindals were not able to commence the work at the steel plant over 4000 acres in Salboni in West Bengal soon, the government would take the land up and go ahead with a different project on it. This was the clear message of chief minister Mamata Banerjee for Sajjan Jindal's steel and power plant. SAlboni had rose to national consciousness a few years back for being the first trigger to the Lalgarh insurgency in Bengal in 2008-09. The movement began after police atrocities on the people in Lalgarh after a blast in Salboni aimed at the chief minister's convoy. Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharya, along with the then steel minister Ram Vilas Paswan were returning from the Salboni after inaugurating the  Special Economic Zone for Jindals.

So many years have passed but very little progress has been seen on the factory.  AT Rs 35000 crore, the 10-million tonne steel plant and a 1,620 MW power plant would have been the highest investment in the state.

Mamata added that the acquired land could not be left idle for so long. Till the plant started functioning the company would also need to pay the families of those who lost their land and did not get compensation Rs 5000 every month.

However, while Banerjee blames the Jindals for keeping the land idle for long, she might be at fault in misusing land acquired for industry herself. A local channel reported that the residents of Shibpur in Birbhum district are miffed with the government for planning to build government residence on a land meant for industry.  More than 1100 people had given their land in 2000 to the Left front government in hope for industry in the area and better job opportunities.

However the chief minister announced that the government will build a Global Market on the land which will include housing project. People are not happy as they feel their giving up pf land will be of little benefit to them.
