An NBA Summer League game played on Sunday night exposed one of the most wonderfully batty rules in sports: With a game between a D-League Select team and the Atlanta Hawks tied after the first overtime, the second overtime was decided by sudden death.

Sudden death basketball!

We all thought Zillgitt was kidding, but he is not kidding. That’s the rule of summer league.

From NBA.com’s rules of summer league:

The second overtime period (or any overtime period thereafter) is sudden death (first team to score a point wins).

Is NBA trying out a new overtime rule that might make its way into the actual league? Or are they just trying to speed things up at summer league and keeping games on schedule? It’s the second one. Definitely the second one.

The D-League Select squad scored after about 45 seconds, and they won the game, and everyone laughed.

We love this idea. It’s insane and ridiculous and we love it.
