Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino has seen the club's pre-season plans further damaged after confirmation that striker Emmanuel Adebayor will miss the north American tour this in order to recover from a bout of malaria.

Adebayor was admitted to hospital on Saturday and though he is expected to be released before the end of the week, he requires seven days recuperation before returning to training.

The Togo international will therefore remain on English shores and miss the pre-season fixtures against Seattle Sounders, Toronto FC and Chicago Fire and the opportunity to impress new manager Pochettino ahead of the new campaign.

"Emmanuel Adebayor is recovering in hospital after contracting a mild bout of malaria," a Tottenham statement read.

"The Togo international was admitted to hospital on Saturday after reporting feeling unwell to our medical staff. A swift diagnosis meant the disease was detected at an early stage and he is responding well to treatment.

"The striker is expected to be released from hospital tomorrow and will then require a minimum of seven days before returning to training.

"The player has been advised not to travel on medical grounds, which means he will be forced to miss our pre-season tour of North America."

Pochettino is already expected to be without five other players due to their World Cup commitments this summer, with Brazil's Paulinho, Belgian pair Mousa Dembele and Nacer Chadli, France goalkeeper Hugo Lloris and Algeria midfielder Nabil Bentaleb all likely to remain in London.

Upon their return, Tottenham face further pre-season games against Celtic, Dagenham and Redbridge and Schalke 04 before the start of the new Premier League season.

Among those who will be available to impress new Tottenham manager Pochettino is Andros Townsend, who missed the end of last season and the World Cup with an ankle injury but after improving his fitness while in Brazil working for ITV as a pundit, he is preparing for a full pre-season.

"I did not get much holidays, but it was important for me to make sure I was 100 per cent fit coming back to training so I can be fit and impress the manager," he said last week.
