Sikh PSA Answers This Ridiculous Question In The Best Possible Way

American actor Waris Ahluwalia is Sikh, and he wears a turban. The question "Where are you from?" has undoubtedly gotten old over the years.

To answer that question once and for all, Ahluwalia featured in a recent public service announcement -- reportedly the first ever to be dedicated entirely to Sikhs.

Created by the Sikh American Legal Defense and Education Fund (SALDEF) in partnership with Comcast, the PSA addresses the persisting anti-Sikh attitudes that exist in the U.S. as evidenced by bullying, discrimination and outright attacks.

Ahluwalia answers the "Where are you from?" question by highlighting several things that make him proud to be American. "I come from a place where you can...fly a plane, raise a family, ride a Harley and serve the community."

Sikhs have been a critical part of American culture for over 125 years, Ahluwalia says, and yet they are still deeply misunderstood. As SALDEF executive director Jasjit Singh told Mic:

"We look at this PSA as an opportunity to introduce our neighbors to Sikh Americans so we can address anti-turban bias head on. We recognize that while there are Sikh Americans that are a visible part of their communities, not everyone has a chance to meet them."

In addition to highlighting the integral role of the Sikh community in the U.S., Ahluwalia also said he hoped the PSA would inspire Sikh Americans to realize their full potential.

"This [PSA] was an opportunity for me to narrate a powerful manifesto with an audience that is twofold," Ahluwalia told Mic. "[Firstly] a national audience that may not be familiar with the Sikh community and secondly to show young Sikh Americans that their paths can be limitless."
