The death of a young B.Sc nursing student named Yukti Chabbra has created shockwaves at Rishikesh-based All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).

The staff and students at the institute were shocked to discover the 'first ever' case of 'suicide' on campus. The local police rushed to the college on the night of June 24 after they were informed that a student was found hanging in her hostel room.

Though her family and friends have been claiming that she didn't commit suicide, the Rishikesh Police termed it a clear case of suicide as a note was recovered from the hostel room. Her family has refuted the police's claim saying that marks found on her body indicate otherwise.

The police maintained that in the note the student had expressed her displeasure over staying in the hostel and had written that she was not "capable enough of staying here" and that she "can't tolerate it anymore". Yukti even termed her step "worst" and her note read "I am not a good daughter" in the letter addressed to her parents.

Rishikesh Police's kotwal Arjun Singh Rawat said, "We found a suicide note and multiple injuries by a surgical knife on her arm, which indicates that the girl had made multiple attempts to commit suicide." The police said on June 24 that Yukti's roommate found the door of her room locked.

She knocked on the door repeatedly but did not get any response from inside. She then informed the hostel warden and the AIIMS staff rushed to the site. They managed to open the door and found the young student hanging from the ceiling fan in the room. On Sunday, in the national Capital, relatives and friends of Yukti protested at Jantar Mantar to demand justice for her. Eighteen-year-old Yukti was a first year student of B.Sc nursing at AIIMS (Rishikesh).

The police said her suicide note hinted at the young girl's pain of living in a hostel environment and she even described herself as a 'prisoner.' She had even blamed her parents for not taking her away from the hostel despite repeated requests, the police quoted from her last note.
