Senior citizen killed by biker at Bhandup

A72-year-old man died after he was knocked down by a motorcyclist at Bhandup (West) on Saturday evening.

Police said that the victim, Radhakrishnan Iyer, who lived in Shrishti Heights on L B S Marg, was out for a walk and the incident occurred when he was crossing the road.

The Bhandup police arrested the motorcyclist, call centre employee Ashish Ghanshyam Pal, 24, for rash driving and causing death due to negligence. He was produced in the Mulund Magistrate’s Court on Sunday and released on bail.

Around 7.45 pm on Saturday, Iyer who worked as a manager with Mahesh Tutorials in Mulund, set out for a stroll and was just few minutes away from his residence when the accident took place on the south-bound stretch of L B S Marg, near Asian Paints Company.

Police said that Pal, a resident of Shanti Nagar, Wagle Estate, Thane, was coming towards Mumbai and attempted to overtake a tempo. He was

unable to see Iyer who was crossing the road ahead of the tempo which had slowed down. On suddenly finding Iyer in front of him, Pal lost control of the black Pulsar (MH 04 GH 5720) and rammed Iyer.

Pal and a friend who was riding pillion, along with some passers-by, took Iyer to Fortis Hospital in Mulund. However, the senior citizen who had suffered grievous injuries to his head and was bleeding from his ears, died during treatment, the police said.

Iyer’s family declined to speak to the media, saying that they were in a state of deep shock.

The police confirmed that Pal was not driving under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident.

The complaint, police said, was registered based on the statement of one Naresh Podekar, 36, an eyewitness to the accident.
