A student of IIT-Kanpur died in a road accident near Lonavla on old Pune-Mumbai highway on Saturday morning. Police have identified the victim as Anil Malpani (20), who was currently residing at Shivaji housing society on Senapati Bapat Road, Pune.
Police said Malpani was among the group of IIT-Kanpur students who were on an educational tour to the city. On Saturday, eight students, most of whom were final year students, left on two-wheelers to visit Lohgad fort and Lonavla.
Malpani and his friend Arun More (20) were on their way to Lonavla on their bike when a speeding truck knocked them down near Hotel Maval Darbar in Waksai village on Pune-Mumbai highway around 9 am. The impact was so severe that Malpani landed on the other side of the lane, where a truck going towards Pune ran over him, causing his death on the spot. Meanwhile, More was admitted to a nearby hospital.
A team of Lonavla rural police and highway police rushed to the spot to take a stock of the situation. Police have informed Malpani’s family about the accident.
