Vandalism in Sec 68: Four BTech students held
Had stolen music systems after breaking windowpanes of four-wheelers parked in the area

Mohali, July 13
The Mohali police arrested four students of BTech for breaking windowpanes of four-wheelers and stealing music systems at Sector 68 here. The accused, all in their early 20s, have been identified as Harsh Luthra, a resident of Jind in Haryana, Shubam from Doragala village of Gurdaspur district (Punjab), Amandeep Singh from New Sant Nagar, Gurdaspur, and Sukhbir Singh of Isepur, Gurdaspur.

Harsh, Shubham and Amandeep are doing BTech from Chandigarh University, Gharuan, while Sukhvir Singh is pursuing the course at Gurdaspur.

Mohali SSP Inder Mohan Singh Bhatti said the youngsters were involved in stealing music systems after breaking windowpanes of four-wheelers in the area. “The accused have been staying in a paying guest accommodation at Phase IX and were keeping a good lifestyle,” said SSP Bhatti.

One of them had an Chevrolet Optra Magnum car, said the police.

The accused had broken windowpanes of a house in Sector 68, in which they used to live earlier, on the intervening night of July 10 and 11.

“Later, they broke windowpanes of several vehicles and took away music systems from them. A case under Sections 379, 427 and 34 of the IPC was registered at the Phase VIII police station on the complaint of Rajveer Singh from Sector 68 here,” said Mohali SP (City 1) Swarndeep Singh.

The accused would be produced in a court tomorrow.

‘Tipsy’ cop visits Panchkula family uninvited, dozes off

Panchkula, July 13
A Panchkula cop, who was allegedly in an inebriated state, entered a house in Sector 19 here at around 3 am and dozed off. As the servant of the family, who was sleeping in the front room, had mistakenly left the entry door open, Head Constable Satbir Singh entered the place and slept next to him.

Astonished, the servant informed the owner. At around 6 am, a 17-year-old son of the owner locked the cop in the room and rang up the police control room (PCR). “A PCR reached at around 7.30 am to pick the policeman. The cop is posted at Sector 7 police post. He was taken to the police station instead of the General Hospital for medical examination,” claimed a neighbour.

Sector 20 police station SHO Inspector Surinder Kumar said, “The cop is undergoing treatment for depression. He had to go to his friend’s place but went to someone else’s house. The complainant stated that he didn’t misbehave.”

The medical examination conducted after eight hours of the incident did not find presence of liquor.

The head constable said his friend’s house was in the same street and he had gone to sleep there but mistakenly entered another house.

Criminal wanted by Punjab Police held

The operations cell of the Chandigarh Police has arrested a criminal wanted by the Punjab Police. He has been identified as Narinder Singh, a resident of Rajpura tehsil, Patiala, Punjab.

The police suspect that the accused might be involved in recent cases of crime in Chandigarh and he will be interrogated in this regard, sources said.

After getting a tip off, a police party headed by SI Jaspal Singh of the operations cell, Sector 26, UT, Chandigarh, under the supervision of Inspector Jasminder Singh laid a barrier at the Chandigarh-Kaimbwala road and apprehended the wanted criminal Narinder Singh, who was coming in an Indica car bearing a registration No. PB-65R-5594 from Kaimbwala village side to Chandigarh. During his personal search, one illegal country made pistol (.32 bore) along with five live cartridges were recovered from his possession.Narinder Singh has a past criminal record. He was arrested in 2004 in Mohali, in a murder case of a woman, Harjit Kaur. In 2009, he was also arrested in two different cases of robbery at Gobindgarh, Punjab, where he along with his accomplices fired gunshots and robbedcash.

Narinder Singh is also wanted in two different criminal cases in Punjab. In April, 2014, he along with other accused Jagdeep Singh and Harjinder Singh, alias Billa, fired on a jeweller at Mullanpur village and robbed cash and jewellery from him. In May, 2014, when a police party of Derra Bassi tried to stop the suspects, they fired gunshots at the police. Two persons were arrested there at the spot whereas Narinder Singh fled from there. He is yet to be arrested in the above said two cases.The investigation is in progress to know whether he is involved in any other case during the period when he was absconding. He will be produced in the court tomorrow.

Gurjant’s murder
Two arrested from Mauli village

Mohali, July 13
In the murder case of Shiromani Akali Dal activist Gurjant Singh, the Mohali police arrested two accused today. The accused have been identified as Kuldeep Singh, alias Deepa (29), and Sukhpreet Singh, alias Roda, both residents of Dharamgarh village.Giving details, Mohali SSP Inder Mohan Singh Bhatti said that both were arrested from near Mauli village.

“The old rivalry between the groups of Gurjant and the accused was the reason behind the murder. A tiff between both the groups had also taken place on the election day following which Gurjant had brandished a pistol on the rivals”, said the SSP.

The police have also recovered a white-coloured Figo car, bearing a registration number PB-65P-8384 from their possession.

The police have registered a murder case against seven persons in this connection at the Sohana Police Station.

Notably, Gurjant Singh was brutally murdered by the accused on July 7 near Kambali village when he went to a car service station there.

Teacher’s jewellery stolen

Chandigarh, July 13
A government schoolteacher reported to the police that some students allegedly stole jewellery from her purse. Reenu Vashishta, a resident Sector 22, reported that her mangal sutra was stolen from her purse at Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 28. The complainant suspects the theft to be the handiwork of some students. The police have registered a case of theft.

Dowry death

A person, a resident of Chandigarh, alleged that Sumit and others, residents of Indira Colony, Mani Majra, Chandigarh, harassed the complainant’s sister to bring in more dowry and set her on fire at her residence. — TNS

Kalyani wins women’s crown

On the concluding day of first Open Table Tennis Championship Kalyani, Saurabh Lathwal, Neha, Pankaj, Pareen and Vikas won titles in their respective categories, held at Table Tennis Hall, Sector 23, here today.

The championship was organised under the aegis of Chandigarh Table Tennis Association and witnessed over 100 players from Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Chandigarh participating in the tournament.

In the final of the women’s category, Kalyani from SD College, Sector 32, defeated Naina from the same college 3-1. Kalyani won the first two sets with ease, 11-5 and 11-6, but dropped the third 4-11. After gaining ground early in the last set, Kalyani won it 11-6.

In the men’s singles category, Saurabh Lathwal from Rohtak defeated Hitesh Dogra from Jalandhar 3-2. In a see-saw battle Lathwal lost two opening sets 9-11 and 3-11. However, he bounced back with powerful won three sets back to back 11-6, 11-8 and 11-5 to win the title.

In the youth girls (U-21 years) event, Neha from Jalandhar beat Kalyani from Chandigarh 3-2. After winning the first set (11-9), Neha fumbled in the next, losing it 9-11. However, making a stirring comeback, Neha won the next three games 11-8, 13-15 and 16-14 to ensure her title. In the boys (U-21 years) category, local contender Pankaj Sidana beat Rohan from Amritsar with ease, 3-1. Pankaj won the first two sets at 11-4 and 11-7. However, he went down 7-11 in the third set. In the final set, he maintained his lead from the start and won it 11-5. In the junior girls singles final, Pareen beat Neha 3-2 (9-11, 8-11, 11-6, 11-9, 13-11) while in the boys event, Vikas beat Harnoor 3-0 (11-9, 11-8, 13-11).

PCA honours players, coach

The Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) during their 66th annual general meeting has honoured former and upcoming players (senior and junior) cricketers of the region, at a function held at PCA Stadium, here today. In the annual awards function, the association honoured two former cricketers who had represented Punjab.

Gurpal Singh, who played from 1955-1970 (representing eastern Punjab, Northern Punjab and Railways) in 40 first class matches and scored 1701 runs at an average of 38.65 and scalped 42 wickets with his off spin bowling was honoured with a cheque of Rs 51,000 and a silver salver.

Maj. Harcharan Singh, who played from 1955 to 1969 represented Patiala State, Southern Punjab and Services and also North Zone against West Indies in 1958 and toured with Indian team to Pakistan in 1960 and also captained Southern Punjab team as a wicket keeper batsman and in his 50 first class matches scored 2,495 runs at an average of 31.18 with 59 catches and 36 stumping as wicket keeper, was presented with a silver salver and a cheque of Rs 51,000. MP Pandove, Honorary Secretary of PCA, awarded the honours to the former players.

Two senior most life members, KP Pandove from Patiala and Chander Mahajan from Jalandhar, were also honoured with a shawl and silver salver. Patiala district won the best district award for 2013-2014 for winning ML Markan Trophy, Dhruv Pandove Trophy and Katoch Shield. The district team was also awarded a cash prize of Rs 6 lakh by PCA President IS Bindra while Chandigarh District was awarded with the 2nd best district award of Rs 3 lakh.

Patiala lad Sandeep Sharma was given the best cricketer award (in senior category) along with a cash award of Rs 1 lakh. In the junior (U-19 years) category, skipper Karan Kaila was awarded with the cash prize of Rs 50,000. Under his captaincy, Punjab won the Vinoo Mankad Trophy and he was also member of the under-19 youth World Cup team and Asia. In the under-16 category, Shubhman Gill for his match winning performances (734 runs at an average of 73.4, including a double century, two centuries and two fifties in the Vijay Merchant Trophy) was given a cash award of Rs 50,000. Punjab finished runners-up in this tournament. In the same category, Abhishek Sharma was also given a cash award of Rs 50,000. He made 514 runs and had a haul of 19 wickets in the tournament.

The association has also instituted a new trophy to in remembrance of Dronacharya Awardee Coach late DP Azad to be given to the most successful coach of the year. The trophy was bagged by Sunil Saggi, coach of Punjab (U-19) team that won Vinoo Mankad Trophy. He was presented a shawl and cash award of Rs 51,000 along with a silver salver.

The individual cash awards to the players were given by GS Walia, honorary joint secretary, Justice SS Sodhi (Retd.) vice-president and BK Mehta, vice-president of the PCA.

Preview class of Choi Kwang Do held at Sukhna

The Chandigarh Choi Kwang Do Association conducted a special preview class at Sukhna Lake here this morning. Thirteen male and seven female practitioners of the discipline, in the 6-40 age bracket, participated in the drills.

The self defence drills were organised under the supervision of Master Bikram S Thapa, chairman of Choi Kwang Do Federation of India. “In today’s environment, it’s important to learn self defence techniques. Martial arts training stimulates optimum health and fitness, impacts personality development, enhances self confidence and ensures self defence among the people,” said Master Bikram S Thapa.

Vikrant sweating hard to attain glory

CHART (Chandigarh Academy for Rural Tennis), a dream place for region’s tennis player, is having a handful of talent getting nurtured under one umbrella and 16-year-old Vikrant Dahiya is one among these upcoming budding talents.

He played over 25 tournaments and also participated in ITF juniors-4 Indore (grade-5) tournament during the month of April. The qualifier went on to play in main draws round.

“I am happy with my performance so far and moreover working hard to improvise. I am focusing on gaining more ground with facing bunch of experienced opponents that makes my worth in these open tournaments,” said Vikrant.

“Like Sanam Singh (international player form Chandigarh), I am looking forward to attain scholarship and nurture my tennis career abroad. After my senior secondary education my prime focus would remain to clear the scholarship exam. And besides focusing on attaining scholarship, I am also looking forward for playing in more ITF competitions,” said Vikrant.

“His performance in recent ITF was appreciable. In the AITA’s tournament, at CLTA, he played with same enthusiasm. His current ITF rank is 1,231, AITA Men ranking is 104, AITA boys (U-18 years) ranking is 30. If everything goes smooth, being at his best of the performances, he would surely attain laurels in the international circuit besides continuing winning laurels in national circuit,” said his coach Gajendra Singh.

In semifinals of boys (U-10 years) category, Arshjot defeated Jivaj at 6-3 and Anuvansh Chungh beat Parth Goyal at 6-2 to march ahead in the final the ongoing Tricity Tennis Tournament being organised by Shemrock Ace Tennis Academy.

Sristi Dhir will face Nechal while Navjot and Prachi will clash in the semi-finals of the girls (under-12 years). In the quarter-final matches, played today, Sristi Dhir trounced down Agam at 6-0 while Nechal outclassed Harleen 6-3. In other two quarterfinals games of the category, Navjot defeated Simran at 6-0 while Prachi overpowered Sabihah at 6-2.

2nd AG Challenger Cup T-20
Sigma XI, Earth Green Infrastructure in final

Cricket team of Sigma XI will face Earth Green Infrastructure side in the final of 2nd AG challenger Cup T-20 cricket tournament, being organised by AG Sports World, at cricket grounds of DAV Senior Secondary School Sector 8, Chandigarh.

In the first semi-finals, played here, Marriott hotel went down against Earth Green Infrastructure side by 4 wickets.

In the second semi-finals, Sigma XI defeated US Vitamins Ltd. by 34 runs. Batting first the winning side posted a healthy total of 165 runs for 7 wickets. Gurvinder scored half century off 65 balls while Rakesh contributed 31 runs. For bowling side, Mohinder (2 for 21) and Avinash (2 for 16) shared the wickets.

Carrom meet from July 27

The Chandigarh Carrom Association will host the 24th Chandigarh State Carrom Tournament at St. Stephen’s School, Sector 45, from July 27 to 29, here.

In the tournament, a total of six events will be organised including men’s and women’s singles, boys’ and girls’ (junior singles) and boys’ and girls’ (sub-junior) singles categories. Players, under 18 years and 14 years, as on December 31, 2014 will be eligible to participate in the junior and sub-junior category, respectively.
