Year on, man held for ‘stealing’ sports bike

Jesinto allegedly told the police he had found a bike parked at Central Plaza at Kalina in Santacruz with the key in the ignition.

A man residing in Santacruz enjoyed rides for a whole year on a sports bike he had allegedly stolen, till an informer tipped-off the police about him on Thursday.

Vakola police officers arrested Nelson Jesinto, 22, on Friday for allegedly robbing a sports bike worth Rs 2 lakh. Jesinto allegedly told the police that in July 2013, he had found a bike parked at Central Plaza at Kalina in Santacruz with the key in the ignition. He took the key and hid nearby, and waited until the owner returned. On his return, the owner assuming that the key was lost left to get a mechanic. “By the time the owner Akshay Puri returned to his motorcycle, Jestino had already stolen the bike,” said Vinyard Mulay, senior police inspector, Vakola police station.

“Jestino then stole the number plate of a Maruti Alto car and replaced the number plate of the motorcycle with it. For a year then, he roamed with the bike throughout the city,” said Mulay. “Jestino was remanded to police custody till July 15 after he was presented before a court,” said Mulay.
