Eighty four workers of Regency Ceramics, Yanam, on Friday appeared before the Chief Judicial Magistrate Court in connection with attacking a police station in 2012.
Workers of the Regency Ceramics had gone on a strike in 2012 urging the management to grant wage increment.
Clash with policeThe month-long strike turned violent on January 27, 2012, when workers clashed with police resulting in a lathicharge, bursting of tear gas shells and the death of staff union president M. Murali Mohan.
Enraged over his death, the workers allegedly attacked the police station and residences of management staff, In the violence that ensued, Chandrasekar was clubbed to death.
The Yanam Police took up the investigation of the case initially. It was later handed over to the CBI. Following the incident, five separate cases were registered by the CBI. A separate case was registered for attacking the police station.
The CBI filed a charge sheet last week before the Chief Judicial Magistrate Court.
Taking up the charge sheet on file, the court summoned them for appearance on Friday. Following their appearance, the case was adjourned to August .
A.V.V. Sathyanarayana, president of the Regency Ceramics Staff and Workers’ Union, told The Hindu , “Till date, no compensation has been given to the families of those who were injured in the police firing. The factory has remained closed since then. The families of workers have been facing difficulties as no salary was paid to them.”
