Around 12 kg gold worth 3.5 crore was seized by sales tax sleuths at NH 24 near CISF headquarters in Ghaziabad on Friday.

GHAZIABAD: Around 12 kg gold worth 3.5 crore was seized by sales tax sleuths at NH 24 near CISF headquarters in Ghaziabad on Friday. According to S K Gautam, joint commissioner, commercial tax, it is the biggest gold cache seized in the history of sale tax department.
The police were tipped off about an Innova car with UP registration number carrying the consignment.
The car was intercepted around 6.30 pm on Friday.
"The consignment was carefully concealed in the box beneath driver's seat," said Gautam of special investigation branch.
The driver, who is identified as Ajay Kumar, did not reveal the name of his employer but said that he had started his journey from Chandani Chowk and the 12 gold 'breads', weighing 1 kg each, were meant to be delivered in Kinari Bazar in Agra. Explaining difference between gold biscuits and gold 'bread', Gautam said, "Each biscuit weighs between 50 to 100 g while single gold 'bread ' weighs 1 kg."
