Jatayu Moksha brings Yakshagana to Bangalore
The Aha! Theatre for Children festival is on at Ranga Shankara. It brings a range of different performances to the children in the city, and as part of the festival, a Yakshagana performance, by 26 children from Udipi, titled Jatayu Moksha, will be staged on Monday, July 14.
Yakshagana is a theater form that combines dance, music, dialogue, costume, makeup and stage techniques in a unique style and form. In Ramayana, Jatayu is a demigod who has the form of a vulture.
Jatayu Moksha focuses on Jatayu, who was the loyal messenger of Lord Rama.
The performance begins with Jatayu lying in anticipation of Rama’s arrival. At this point in time, Rama and Lakshmana are out in search for Sita, and during their journey, they encounter Jatayu, who tells the brothers that Sita was abducted by Ravana. What is interesting is that right after revealing this, Jatayu breathes his last since he was injured. Touched by the sacrifice, Rama and Lakshmana grant him salvation (moksha).
